A new measuring system: Optimized test execution in the Technical Center Felting
New measuring system in the Technical Center Felting
At the start of 2023, the plant in the Technical Center Felting of the Technology and Development Center was expanded: An online measuring system from Hammer IMS was installed.
Previously, the fabric weight of nonwovens was measured manually on our plant.
This process involved taking small, circular nonwoven samples with a defined area from the produced nonwoven sheet.
The samples were then weighed and the area-related mass of the nonwoven was calculated from the measurement values.
This work step is complex and must also be repeated until the correct fabric weight is achieved and at regular intervals during the entire production period for process monitoring.
With the new online measuring system, we are now able to track a change in the fabric weight during the production of the nonwoven in real time.
How does the measuring device work?
The system sends out gigaherz waves – similar to smartphone waves – a receiver records them and measures the shielding of the waves caused by the different densities in the nonwoven.
The proportion of shielding is equated with a manually measured fabric weight.
From this point on, the change in fabric weight can be tracked live on the display.
The fabric weight measurement system makes testing at the Technical Center Felting more efficient and allows more statistically accurate conclusions to be made about the weight per unit area.
We are also able to get ever closer to our customers’ production facilities during commissioning and can better understand their challenges in the process.
